French soldier killed in attack on UN mission in Lebanon
A French soldier was killed and three others wounded in an attack while clearing a road in southern Lebanon, an operation linked to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The incident took place in the village of Ghandouriyeh, with initial assessments by UNIFIL and French officials attributing the attack to Iran-backed Hezbollah, though the group denied involvement. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the assault, describing it as "unacceptable," and urged Lebanese authorities to investigate and hold those responsible accountable. The French patrol was ambushed while attempting to reopen a route to an isolated UNIFIL post, according to France’s armed forces minister, Catherine Vautrin. Two of the wounded peacekeepers were reported to be in serious condition. Lebanon’s army also condemned the shooting and launched an investigation, with President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam offering condolences and calling for swift action. UNIFIL, which has operated in Lebanon since 1978, has faced repeated attacks, including during the recent 2024 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Separately, the Israeli military reported killing members of a "terrorist cell" in southern Lebanon that violated a US-brokered ceasefire by approaching Israeli forces. Israel has established a "Yellow Line" demarcation in southern Lebanon, similar to the one separating Israeli forces from Hamas in Gaza, to monitor and respond to ceasefire violations. The ceasefire, agreed on April 16, does not require Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, where Israeli troops have conducted operations including the destruction of villages and infrastructure south of the Litani River, an area comprising about 8% of Lebanese territory. The ongoing tensions underscore the fragile security situation in southern Lebanon, where UN peacekeepers operate amid hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel. The attack on French peacekeepers highlights the risks faced by international forces and the challenges in maintaining stability in a region marked by complex geopolitical rivalries and unresolved conflicts.
