Govt thanks UAE for cooperation leading to Kinahan arrest
The Government has expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for their cooperation in the arrest of Daniel Kinahan, a key figure in the Kinahan Organised Crime Group. Kinahan was detained in the UAE following a search and surveillance operation shortly after an Irish arrest warrant was issued. The 48-year-old is currently in custody awaiting extradition proceedings, having been directed by the Director of Public Prosecutions to face trial in Ireland on charges related to organised crime. The arrest marks a significant development in efforts to tackle international organised crime, highlighting the effectiveness of the bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the UAE. Taoiseach Micheál Martin emphasized that the swift action demonstrates the strength of judicial cooperation and affirmed that due process will be followed. Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Jim O’Callaghan personally thanked his UAE counterpart for their collaboration, describing it as a strong example of cross-border judicial partnership. UAE authorities characterized Kinahan as a fugitive involved in an international organised crime network, underscoring the joint commitment between the two countries to combat transnational criminal activities. The operation reflects ongoing efforts to dismantle the Kinahan cartel, which has been linked to various criminal enterprises across multiple jurisdictions. This arrest is expected to have significant implications for law enforcement strategies targeting organised crime groups operating on a global scale.
