Hopes Irish women on hantavirus-hit ship can do six-week quarantine in their homes
Two Irish women repatriated from the hantavirus-affected cruise ship MV Hondius are currently undergoing clinical assessment and testing in hospital isolation facilities in Dublin. They were transported by government jet from the Canary Islands and are being monitored closely amid hopes that much of their six-week quarantine period can be completed at home. Both women are currently asymptomatic and have expressed gratitude for the medical care they are receiving. Health officials are conducting PCR tests to detect the virus and screening blood samples for antibodies, while also tracing the women’s movements on the ship to identify any potential exposure to infected passengers. The MV Hondius outbreak has resulted in at least nine confirmed or suspected hantavirus cases, including three fatalities involving two Dutch passengers and one German passenger. Passengers were evacuated with strict infection control measures, including disinfection of the plane and isolation protocols upon arrival. Hantavirus, carried by rodents, rarely transmits between humans; however, the Andes strain involved in this outbreak is believed to have spread among passengers in close contact. Despite the severity of the cases on the ship, health experts emphasize that the risk to the general European population remains very low, and this situation does not indicate the start of a pandemic. The incubation period for the virus ranges from one to six weeks, necessitating ongoing vigilance and monitoring of the repatriated individuals. Irish medical authorities are following guidance from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and are adopting a precautionary approach due to uncertainties surrounding the virus. Symptoms can initially include fever, respiratory, and gastrointestinal issues, with the potential for rapid progression to severe illness. The situation highlights the importance of stringent infection control measures and close monitoring to prevent further spread.
